Filecrypt.sys is a Windows driver. A driver is a small software program that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or connected devices. This means that a driver has direct access to the internals of the operating system, hardware etc.The free file information forum can help you determine if filecrypt.sys is a Windows system file or if it belongs to an application that you can trust.
Description: The original filecrypt.sys is an important part of Windows and rarely causes problems. Filecrypt.sys is located in the C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers folder. The file size on Windows 10/11/7 is 45,056 bytes. The driver can be started or stopped from Services in the Control Panel or by other programs.Filecrypt.sys is a Windows system file. The filecrypt.sys file is a Microsoft signed file. The program is not visible.filecrypt.sys appears to be a compressed file. Therefore the technical security rating is 0% dangerous.
Important: Some malware disguises itself as filecrypt.sys, particularly when not located in the C:\\Windows\\System32\\drivers folder. Therefore, you should check the filecrypt.sys process on your PC to see if it is a threat. We recommend Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security. This was one of the Top Download Picks of The Washington Post and PC World.
A clean and tidy computer is the key requirement for avoiding problems with filecrypt. This means running a scan for malware, cleaning your hard drive using 1cleanmgr and 2sfc /scannow, 3uninstalling programs that you no longer need, checking for Autostart programs (using 4msconfig) and enabling Windows' 5Automatic Update. Always remember to perform periodic backups, or at least to set restore points.
To help you analyze the filecrypt.sys process on your computer, the following programs have proven to be helpful: ASecurity Task Manager displays all running Windows tasks, including embedded hidden processes, such as keyboard and browser monitoring or Autostart entries. A unique security risk rating indicates the likelihood of the process being potential spyware, malware or a Trojan. BMalwarebytes Anti-Malware detects and removes sleeping spyware, adware, Trojans, keyloggers, malware and trackers from your hard drive.
However, I hope more information about the filecrypt driver will be available some day, even more so as its description suggests it may handle security critical tasks, which would be good to know more about in case one considers disabling it...
I'm surprised that you proposed your post as an answer. The point of this thread was to get information about the role of the filecrypt filesystem minifilter driver. As of now, the only specific facts we know about it are its interference with luafv.sys and its description, both of which I knew before coming here. Disabling it may even be a security risk, but who knows finally
I have been having this problem myself as you have described. I have been trying to troubleshoot myself with no luck as I am not computer savvy. Turning off fast startup and updating windows did not help. I reinstalled/updated a few drivers and that also did not help. I don't really know what I am doing. I do not get official BSOD but I get random shutdowns with event 41 and npsvctrig and filecrypt as well as a few other files loading seconds before. Npsvctrig is always the last file loaded before event 41 in event log. I have been having this issue for a few weeks at least. The shutdowns sometimes happen when the computer is exiting sleep but they usually happen while the computer is in use. The occur during light browsing and not usually during gaming so it is probably not a heat issue. They occur usually once or twice a day. Any insights would be a huge help.
The other cases I've been studying also involved the problem cropping up just approx. 2-3 weeks ago. As I said earlier, it seems to closely coincide with a recent update released a newer version of npsvctrig.sys and/or filecrypt.dll. Would you please post screenshots of your version numbers for those two files.
Sorry for the late response. I uploaded screenshots of the version of the files. I could not find filecrypt.dll but I found filecrypt.sys. Searching for filecrypt.dll returned no results on my computer. These files do not appear to have been updated recently. The last date they were modified was April 2018.
SYS issues related filecrypt.sys can be attributed in most cases to a missing or corrupted Windows 10 Education N x86 device driver or faulty hardware, leading to a \"blue screen of death\" (BSOD) error message. Downloading and replacing your SYS file can fix the problem in most cases. Furthermore, keeping your device drivers updated will help ensure that filecrypt.sys-related driver errors are prevented in the future.
Placing this new filecrypt.sys file in the same location (overwriting the previous) and your issue should be resolved, but you'll want to check to be sure. Confirm that the error is resolved by attempting to open Windows 10 Education N x86 and / or conducting the operation that triggers the issue.
In many cases, filecrypt.sys errors causing a Blue Screen of Death occur after Windows 10 Education N x86-related installation of hardware or software. These filecrypt.sys blue screens can appear during program installation, while a filecrypt.sys-related software program (eg. Windows 10 Education N x86) is running, while a Microsoft driver is being loaded, or during Windows startup or shutdown. It's important to notate when Blue Screen errors with filecrypt.sys happen, as it helps troubleshoot Windows 10 Education N x86-related problems, and report them back to Microsoft.
Firmware, driver, hardware, or software problems can all cause filecrypt.sys-related Blue Screen errors. These could be related to either Windows 10 Education N x86 software or Microsoft hardware, but it is not necessarily the case.
The development of Microsoft Windows Operating System by Microsoft prompted the latest creation of filecrypt.sys. It is also known as a Windows sandboxing and encryption filter file (file extension SYS), which is classified as a type of Win32 EXE (Driver) file.
There are a number of reasons why you could be encountering issues with filecrypt.sys. Most of the issues concerning SYS files involve Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors. These types of filecrypt.sys errors can be cause by hardware problems, outdated firmware, corrupt drivers, or other software-related (eg. Windows update) issues. Some of these errors include:
GEEK TIP : As a rule of thumb, it's always a good idea to create a Windows \"Snapshot\" backup / System Restore Point before making any hardware or software changes to your computer. That way, it's very easy to restore your system in the unfortunate event you encounter a filecrypt.sys Blue Screen of Death error after recent changes.
If you're encountering one of the error messages above, follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve your filecrypt.sys issue. These troubleshooting steps are listed in the recommended order of execution.
System File Checker is a utility included with every Windows version that allows you scan and restore corrupted system files. Use the SFC tool to fix missing or corrupt filecrypt.sys files (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10):
When the first two steps haven't solved your issue, it might be a good idea to run Windows Update. Many filecrypt.sys error messages that are encountered can be contributed to an outdated Windows Operating System. To run Windows Update, please follow these easy steps:
If none of the previous three troubleshooting steps have resolved your issue, you can try a more aggressive approach (Note: Not recommended for amateur PC users) by downloading and replacing your appropriate filecrypt.sys file version. We maintain a comprehensive database of 100% malware-free filecrypt.sys files for every applicable version of Windows. Please follow the steps below to download and properly replace you file:
GEEK TIP : We must emphasize that reinstalling Windows will be a very time-consuming and advanced task to resolve filecrypt.sys problems. To avoid data loss, you must be sure that you have backed-up all of your important documents, pictures, software installers, and other personal data before beginning the process. If you are not currently backing up your data, you need to do so immediately.
CAUTION : We strongly advise against downloading and copying filecrypt.sys to your appropriate Windows system directory. Microsoft typically does not release Windows SYS files for download because they are bundled together inside of a software installer. The installer's task is to ensure that all correct verifications have been made before installing and placing filecrypt.sys and all other SYS files for Windows. An incorrectly installed SYS file may create system instability and could cause your program or operating system to stop functioning altogether. Proceed with caution.
