This report is based on the results of a large-scale survey that was designed to capture the religious landscape of the United States. The survey used both English and Spanish languages to interview a diverse and representative sample of 35,071 adults across the country. The interviews were conducted by phone, using both landline and cellphone numbers, over a period of nearly four months, from June 4 to September 30, 2014. The findings from the full sample have a high level of accuracy, with a margin of sampling error of only plus or minus 0.6 percentage points. The survey aimed to reach as many U.S. adults as possible; however, about 3% of them were not eligible to participate in the survey because they either did not have access to a phone, or they did not speak English or Spanish well enough to answer the questions. (For more details on how the survey was conducted, how the margin of error varies for different subgroups analyzed in this report and other technical information, please see Appendix A.)
